Fluorescent lamps save considerable energy over incandescent bulbs of equal brightness. Although ordinary incandescent dimmers will dim the "dimmable" screw-in fluorescent lamps, most dimmers do not have three features necessary for use in a poultry building.
First, it is critical to have an adjustable low end setting to prevent the lamps from being dimmed so much that they start to flicker and go out. Flickering lamps will fail prematurely, so it is important to keep the light output steady at all times!
Second, full voltage should be applied to the fluorescent lamps on start-up. If an ordinary incandescent dimmer turns the lamps on at a dimmed setting, some of the lamps may flicker instead of coming on steady. Again, flickering lamps will burn out prematurely.
Third, a voltage regulated dimmer circuit helps when the line voltage dips a little and the lamps are dimmed. Most ordinary incandescent dimmers do not have voltage compensation, so again, some of the lamps may start to flicker and go out if the line voltage dips.
All Kalglo fluorescent light dimmers have these three very important features to help maximize the life of the "dimmable" fluorescent lamps.

To determine the size dimmer needed:
(1.) Multiply the lamp fixture labeled current rating by 2.5 to allow for power factor variations.
(2.) Multiply this number by the number of lamp fixtures to get the total load current in amps.
(3.) The total load amps should be 80% or less than the correct dimmer's TOTAL AMPS rating.
